In a Home Technology eMagazine article, the idea that broadband Internet service is the latest utility in the home right next to electricity, water, gas, etc. According to an article in Cepro.com citing a Department of Commerce study, 60% of US homes have broadband today. Of the 40% that don't have it yet, 62% say they want it. So most of the US has it and likely pays it as a utility, just like the electric bill. Some may even get it reimbursed by their employers.
The ‘connected home’ is really starting to become a reality. With more and more devices that link to the home network arriving in stores the prices are plummeting. Broadband is cheaper and service providers are under pressure to find new ways to exploit their mobile and fixed broadband networks. In addition, concern for carbon emissions and new smart grid strategies are driving the deployment of still more networked devices.
The net of the article is that since it's a utility, consumers now are looking to see what else it can do for them for their $49.95 per month. We are passed using it for music downloads and surfing. Now what? How can I get more return out of my monthly investment? The article suggests that this realization of the connected home over broadband is the next big thing. Energy management, home monitoring and device control is poised for incredible growth.
