There are several options today for getting 3D at home- HDTV, front projector and screen, active glasses, passive glasses, etc. Cepro.com has a short comparison of some of the options today. There's also a good piece on the best demos at the recent CEDIA Expo in Atlanta.
In general, the best experience for 3D comes from higher end front projection systems, a large screen and limited yet appropriate 3D content from Blu-Ray. Pretty much everything else is a test-market gimic.
