According to an article on cepro.com, home appraisers and the real estate market in general are very behind the times when considering technology as a component for the overall value of a home. Fancy kitchen countertops, pretty bathrooms and hardwood floors contribute more to the value of a house than future-ready wiring and now energy efficient technologies and materials.
Go figure. That would just be too progressive. Industry experts say that you should fire your appraisers until you get somone who gets it. Especially when it comes to 'green' homes and construction, there can be significant value when considering cost savings that currently are being missed in appraisals.
To make matters even worse, LEED doesn't even consider technology when determining their point scores for LEED certified homes. The appraisal, real estate and 'green-certification industries really need to make some changes to get with the times. Their customers are the ones that will benefit most.
